Chasing 500 GW: India's Race to Add 50 GW of Solar Annually

India will need to add approximately 50 GW of solar power capacity annually to remain on track toward achieving its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity, according to a report by Rubix Data Sciences.

The report estimates that the country’s installed solar capacity could reach between 280 GW and 300 GW by 2030, positioning solar energy as the primary driver of India’s clean energy transition. To achieve this projected capacity and support the broader renewable energy target, sustained deployment of around 50 GW of solar installations each year will be essential throughout the remainder of the decade.

The findings underscore the scale of investment, infrastructure development, and policy support required to accelerate renewable energy adoption, strengthen grid integration, and meet the country's long-term decarbonisation and energy security objectives.
